It is very important for the neck tenon to fit well in the receiver. I am very picky about this because a poorly fitting neck receiver can affect saxophones in unpredictable ways. A poorly fit neck can affect response, intonation, projection, focus, altissimo, and overtones. Sax players often think they have bad reeds when their neck tenon is just leaking or warbling. Like mouthpiece refacing, this should only be done by sax repair specialists that perform this repair regularly.

Description:

It is very important for the keys on saxophones to be tight in order to achieve an airtight set-up. While traditional swedging helps, it does not tighten the posts and it does not tighten the entire length of the hinge tube. The best way to tighten the keys is to replace the steel with a slightly larger diameter steel and ream the keys and posts to match. By doing a steel replacement, I can make your vintage sax keys tighter and more dependable than a modern brand new professional sax.

All keys are removed. The body and neck are cleaned with soap, water, and sometimes specialized chemicals. All the keys and levers are hand cleaned. Each pad is hand cleaned and the pad leather is oiled as needed. Pads, neck cork, and key silencers are replaced as needed. The bell, body, keys, and levers are straightened as needed. During reassembly spring tensions, key heights, and timing are all set to our very high standards. Every sax is play tested by Chris Moller.

All professional sax overhauls at Agave Music are done by myself, Chris Moller. I do not file on tone holes unless absolutely necessary and I check every overhaul with a Magnehelic to ensure it is airtight.

Next to choosing your sax and mouthpiece set-up, having your saxophone overhauled is the most important decision you make about your gear. A quality overhaul lasts decades so if you end up with a mediocre overhaul, you are stuck playing on an underperforming sax, paying for another overhaul, or selling it to another unsuspecting player. None of these options are ideal. I am dedicated to keeping all the metal on the sax so it sounds the same as it did decades or even centuries ago.

All keys and levers are removed and the body, neck keys and levers are cleaned. Minor dents are removed. We ensure the body, neck, keys, and levers are straight. All pads, key silencers, and neck cork are replaced. Pads are leveled and seated. The neck is refit. During reassembly, spring tensions, key heights, and timing are all set to our very high standards. Professional saxophones are tested on the Magnehelic to ensure an airtight seal and every sax is play tested by Chris Moller.
